Manuscript Formatting Recommendation: Use a 12-point font. Use a serif font; Times Roman is the most frequent. Your manuscript should be double spaced. There isn't any extra space between paragraphs. There is just one gap between sentences. Each paragraph should be indented by half an inch (setting a tab, not using several spaces). All pages should have exactly the same format.
The first thing to do when writing your manuscript is to decide what kind of document it will be. Will it be a report, a collection of articles, a book? The choice of genre will affect how you structure your text as well as what you include in it. For example, if you are writing a book review article, then its main topic can only be covered in a limited number of words. As a result, you will need to choose your topics carefully and make sure that they are interesting and relevant. A book review, therefore, will focus more on describing the subject's overall quality rather than giving detailed accounts of each chapter.
Will your manuscript be for publication or presentation only? If it is for public consumption, then you will need to consider copyright issues. You cannot use material from other sources without proper permission. You must also check whether there are any legal requirements that would prevent you from doing so.

The manuscript format is intended to make your work easy to read and to make it easier for an editor or publisher to contact you. Prose writings should be double-spaced with one-inch to one-and-a-quarter margins. (Single-spaced poetry is OK.) Use Times New Roman or another serif typeface, not comic sans or some other cartoon font.
Include a title page containing the author's name, address, phone number, and email address. Also include a copyright page with the title of the article and its date. Some journals have additional pages included in the print version that are not available online, such as the front matter or back matter. These are usually indicated by page numbers in the journal or publication issue. Include these pages in your manuscript too.
Use formal language and avoid colloquialisms when writing about science. If you use non-standard words or phrases, define them in a dictionary or thesaurus before you write them out for clarity. When writing an abstract, keep in mind that reviewers will not read beyond the first few sentences. So try to capture the attention of the reader with a compelling hook!
References are important pieces of information that help others find information about your ideas or findings. They are also required by many journals in order to give credit where it is due.
Using Microsoft Word to Format a Manuscript
Print your work in black ink alone on 8.5" x 11" ordinary 20-lb. Printer paper. Unless otherwise specified in the publisher's submission criteria, use a 12-point Times New Roman or Arial typeface. There is two spaces. One space follows every paragraph and another space at the end of a page. Use one inch margins on all sides. You can include a cover with your submission if you'd like.
Include a cover letter telling us why you think your book is appropriate for consideration for publication. This should be no more than one page in length, although we encourage authors to be more creative. With time constraints often present in young adult publishing, we ask that you limit yourself to one hour for your presentation.

Use a common typeface (Times New Roman or Arial work well). Nothing else should be used for your manuscript. Please keep in mind that your final book may have a different typeface. Some typefaces read better in book format than others.
In terms of layout, the book should be typed single-spaced (not double-spaced as is usually done for a magazine article). Use hard returns rather than paragraphs. And make sure that all pages are identical in size and orientation to each other.
Your book will be seen by many people-including other writers-so it must present an honest image of yourself. Do not include any material that would cause embarrassment when it is published.
The best way to start thinking about your book's layout is to think about what you want to say and how you want to say it. From there, choose a structure that will help you get your message across while still being interesting to readers who might not necessarily agree with you. For example, if you are writing a political book, you could choose between writing a manifesto (a short statement of intent) or a memoir (an account of one person's life). Either way, after you have chosen a structure, you need to decide what kind of book it is going to be: analytical, critical, or entertaining.
