Sukhbiir (Hindi: sukhbiir), alias Balbir Singh, was a Punjabi novelist, short-story writer, poet, and essayist who lived from 9 July 1925 until 22 February 2012. He was regarded as one of the most important writers of modern Punjab literature.

When he was nine years old, his father died when hit by a train while trying to save some children. The death of his father caused Sukhbir a lot of pain and sadness since then he wanted to become a writer so that he could tell people about their feelings after someone they love is gone.
After his father's death, his mother moved to Amritsar with her three daughters to live with their uncle. Here she owned a small grocery shop but due to the high prices of goods in Amritsar, they could not make any profit. Punjabi is one of the four official languages of India. It is estimated that around 10 million people speak this language, which has many similarities with Hindi.
In Canada, Punjabi is one of the most spoken Asian languages after English. In fact, it is the second most spoken Asian language in the country after Chinese. There are several reasons why Punjabis have come to Canada: they have found good jobs in the government and private sectors, they have been successful in business, and some have even become politicians.
In Britain, the first generation of immigrants used their knowledge of the English language to find employment. But as time passed, they started teaching their children the native language so they could communicate with their family back home. Today, around 2 million people in Britain speak Punjabi at home.
In the United States, the first wave of immigrants came from Punjab.
