On the first page of your work, double-space your name, professor's name, class name, and date in the upper left-hand corner, with a 1-inch margin on the top and left sides. The rest of the space should be filled with your essay.
To write the name of a professor or instructor on the first page of your essay, follow this format: [first name] ([class title]) [institute/college name].
For example, if I wanted to refer to my advisor as Professor Keating, I would type his name in the first slot of the document editor: keating bradley msc 2011.
When typing multiple names into one document, separate them with a comma.
In this case, I would also type in the institute/college after the class title, like so: keating bradley msc 2011 american university. This is important because not all professors at American University are members of the faculty of arts and sciences, which is why I included the institute/college name in my example.
If there is more than one professor with whom you are writing, use a semicolon to separate their names.
Title and heading Begin typing your name, your instructor's name (or instructors' names, if there is more than one instructor), the course number, and the date on separate lines, one inch from the top of the first page and flush with the left margin. Months can be written in full or shortened. Days can be written as well.
Next, begin writing your name below the title page. Do not worry about spelling or grammar; this is not a professional document.
Include the year above your name when it differs from the year on the document. For example, if you completed the project in 2010 but wrote the report in 2011, then put "2010" above your name on the title page. This is important because some assignments require you to indicate the year that you started the assignment in order to claim it by office policy.
After you have written your name, go back and fill out the rest of the page. The beginning of each line should end with a space or punctuation mark.
If you are using Microsoft Word as your word processing program, you can create a title page for free using the default settings. If you want to edit any of the information on the title page, such as changing the writer's name or adding additional pages, you will need to save your file.
As in Jones 3, your last name and page number should appear in the upper right corner of each page of your essay, including the first page. As a "header," provide your name and the page number. Do not type this information where your essay's text should be. Instead, use a pencil to mark your name and page number on the margin of your paper.
If your professor requires that work be identified by student ID numbers instead of names, then write the identification number in place of your name on the line provided. The number should be written in black ink (no pen colors will appear on copy).
Your signature is also written on the last page of your essay. It should include your full legal name, address, phone number, and email address.
If you need to reference part of your essay in another assignment, you can do so with clear and concise annotation. Use footnotes for detailed explanations or quotes, and end notes for referencing sections of books etc. These notes should always come at the end of the relevant paragraph or page number.
1 to 1.5" margins (top, bottom, and side) To distinguish each paragraph, indent them or place a blank line between them. On the top left, write your last name and page number (for lengthier essays). You have the option of signing your name at the conclusion of your scholarship essay. If you choose to sign your work, use a blue pen for authenticity's sake.
Name the school/organization that is giving you the award. If it is not a specific organization but rather a general category such as "Humanities", list several organizations that fall under this category. Avoid listing names of companies where you once worked. Such lists are often included in personal statements and letters of recommendation and can easily be found through online searches.
In addition to the above, you may want to include information about how long you have been receiving this award, who has given it in past years, and anything else that might help readers understand its significance to you.
Remember: The purpose of your scholarship essay is to explain how the award will benefit you by identifying your needs and goals. Be sure to address these issues explicitly and provide examples from your experience or knowledge of the world that support your claims.
For example, if you are applying to medical schools, you could discuss how receiving this award would help you achieve your goal of becoming a doctor by allowing you to focus on studying rather than paying tuition.
