The usual short narrative should be between 5,000 and 10,000 words long, although they can be longer. A flash fiction tale is a brief narrative of 500 words or fewer. Four days have passed. Can you finish your story by then?
The short answer is yes, you can write a book in five days. But it's not easy - especially if you want to produce a first-class piece of writing that readers will enjoy and connect with.
Writing a book is not a sprint. It's an endurance race where you need to keep going even when you feel like stopping. And more often than not, people give up before reaching the end. They make all sorts of excuses as to why they can't write any more: "There's nothing left to write about," "I'm running out of ideas," "My hands are too sore from typing to go on anymore." But they still go to bed each night with their heads full of stories waiting to be written.
If you want to write a good book in five days, you need to set yourself a goal that's challenging but doable. And you need to know how to use what's called "the six-step structure" for narratives.
In a nutshell, this means that every story needs a beginning, a middle, and an end.
However, the term "short" may refer to a variety of things. In general, a short tale can range from 1,000 to 15,000 words, however most journals only print short stories between 300 and 5,000 words. Anything under 1000 words is classified as flash fiction or micro-fiction. Anything over 15,000 words is called a novella.
The number of words in a short story is important because it determines how much space it will take up when published. If you want your story to be included in a collection, then you should try to keep it under 7,500 words so that all the other stories can be too. Any longer than this and someone might have to read between the lines! A short story cannot be any more than 3000 words long - anything beyond this and it becomes a novel.
When you write a short story, you need to be sure that you include enough detail for the reader to understand what is going on but not so much that you wear them out with excess information. It is also important that you do not put too many sentences together in one paragraph because this makes reading difficult for the eye. Most short stories are written in paragraphs of at least seven sentences but some writers like to use punctuation more liberally (and confusingly) sometimes using short sentences instead. Short stories should be easy to read and understand even without looking at the end of the sentence or the start of the next line.
