"The typical novel nowadays is roughly 90,000 words," editor Shawn Coyne writes in "Outlining Your Book in 3 Easy Steps." "Large, epic stories might range from 120,000 to 200,000 words." He does, however, state that "The Wizard of Oz was 40,000 words." So you see, it's all about how you count words.
That said, most novels fall between 100,000 and 180,000 words. If you write easily digestible scenes with clear conflicts and resolutions, then you should be able to finish a book in a month or two. Longer books may need more time, but even very long novels are still short stories: they can be told in less than 150 pages if you remove the ending of every third sentence.
