Is Annabel Lee a real person?

T. O. Mabbott, among others, claimed that Annabel Lee was only the product of Poe's dark imagination and that she was not based on any real person. Poe's childhood sweetheart, Sarah Elmira Royster, felt the poem was written just for her and that Poe himself stated as much. However, other evidence suggests that Annabel Lee may have been based on someone else. For example, there is some speculation that she may have been inspired by the death of Poe's first wife, Maria Clemm.

Poe married Maria in 1827 when he was 24 years old. She gave birth to a daughter, Virginia, in 1828. In 1831, after only two years of marriage, Maria died from tuberculosis. It has been speculated that this experience may have influenced some of the themes in "The Raven" -- especially the ending where it is suggested that Annabel Lee was never found.

In addition, there are similarities between the two women. They were both young, beautiful, educated, and died very young. Even their names are similar -- Annabel Lee being the English version of Maria's surname, Margareta.

Poe also wrote about Annabel Lee in another poem called "Ulalume". Here, it is revealed that she has fallen in love with another man and wants to leave her family home. When she refuses to return, her father sends a hunter to kill her.

What is the persona of the poem Annabel Lee?

Annabel Lee's poem has a lovely melody and rhymes. Poe wrote it in May 1849, the year before his death. It relates the story of two individuals in love: Annabel Lee and the speaker, who is a masculine identity based on the poet himself. This dual nature of the poem makes it unique among Poe's work.

The persona of the poem is the voice that speaks on behalf of its subject, in this case, Annabel Lee. This voice is that of a young man who sings about how he loves Annabel Lee and asks her to marry him. He ends the poem by saying she will always be beautiful because he will remember their first kiss.

Poe used the persona of the poem to express his own feelings about Annabel Lee. She was his sweetheart and he wanted to marry her, but she had already married another man. When he heard about the marriage, his heart broke into a thousand pieces and he died shortly afterwards.

Although Poe did not live up to his promise of marrying Annabel Lee, she said later in life that she thought of him every day until she died in 1857 at the age of 27.

How does the author feel about Annabel Lee?

In Edgar Allan Poe's "Annabel Lee," a speaker laments the loss of his love. The tone of the poem is sad and melancholy at first, then builds to a bold determination. The mood echoes the tone, moving from haunting sorrow to incongruous grandeur.

Poe was an American writer who created some of the most famous poems in the English language. He was also a successful poet, editor, literary critic, publisher, and teacher. His work has been influential in and beyond literature, especially in the fields of science and psychology.

Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was John Henry Poe and his mother was Maria Clemm. He had two siblings: a brother named Richard Edward Poe and a sister named Mary Jane Poe. When he was only seven years old, his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where his father took up a new job. They lived there for three years before moving back to Boston. During these years in Baltimore, Poe lost both of his parents.

When he was 11 years old, his father died of tuberculosis. This tragedy greatly affected Poe who wrote many poems and stories about death and mourning later in his life.

At age 16, he dropped out of school to work as an editor for a newspaper. A few months later, he was made manager of the paper.
