Billboard is an American magazine and website that publishes music-related news, video, commentary, reviews, events, and fashion. It is well-known for its music charts, such as the Hot 100, Billboard 200, and Global 200, which monitor the most popular songs and albums across several genres. The magazine was founded in 1958 by John Stanfield and Walter Hagen, and they hired Evan Jones to be their first editor.
Stanfield and Hagen realized early on that to be successful, they needed to get out of town city limits and reach more people. So they decided to make Billboard a national magazine that would appeal to all types of musicians, not just those from urban areas. They also wanted to provide readers with interesting articles beyond just music news. Thus, a newspaper-like format was adopted.
