Leo Tolstoy is significant as a novelist as well as a highly influential spiritual and political character; he is a key stepping stone between classic Romanticism and the Modern Romanticism of the twentieth century. His work influenced major writers from Henry David Thoreau to Ernest Hemingway, and many more.
Tolstoy was born on November 7, 1828 in Kyivan-Sakhalinskaya gubernsia, Russian Empire (now Ukraine). He had two brothers and one sister. His father, Leo Nikolayevich, was a wealthy landowner and his mother, Maria Nikolaevna, was a noblewoman with connections to the imperial family. When Tolstoy was young, his family moved to Saint Petersburg where they lived in luxurious circumstances. He did not make any close friends at school and spent most of his time reading novels by European authors or playing outdoor games like polo.
When Tolstoy was 19 years old, his father died and his brother Sergius became responsible for financing their large household. This caused Tolstoy to quit school and start working as a clerk in a provincial government office. He only stayed there for three months but it was enough to give him a dislike for officialdom. After his stint at school and before starting work, he read some French poets such as William Shakespeare and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

They had only been married for seven years when she died giving birth to a third child. Tolstoy then met Anna Grigorievna Behrs, a beautiful young widow with three children. They fell in love and were married in 1860.

Leo Tolstoy is best known for authoring extraordinarily long works. That being said, it all depends on how much time you have available and how motivated you are to reading the book. My recommendation is that you begin with The Death of Ivan Ilyich. This composition is both brief and regarded as one of his finest.
Leo Tolstoy was born on November 7th, 1828 in Tula, Russia. His father was a government official who worked for a bank and his mother was a devout Russian Orthodox Christian. When Leo was only nine years old, his father died and he was forced to leave school to help support his family. He learned to be a lawyer but soon grew dissatisfied with this career choice and decided to use his time productively by writing. His first novel came out in 1857 when he was twenty-four years old. Since then, he has gone on to publish over seventy books including essays, poems, stories, and philosophical tracts.
Although he was greatly influenced by Alexander Pushkin and Nikolai Gogol, Tolstoy developed his own unique style which has been described as "Russian Realism." His novels and short stories focus on the ordinary people of Russia during the period from the end of Napoleon's occupation in 1815 until the death of Ivan Ilyich in 1869. They display an acute understanding of human nature that has made him famous worldwide.
