The TV Series A novella is intended to be read after seeing all the episodes of its corresponding television show. Like the film series, these books feature stories that fit within their respective shows' parameters. They are also easy to write since you don't have to worry about character development or complex plotlines.
The Comic Book Series An ongoing comic book series features one new issue per month. These books are easy to write because there's not much room for error given how quickly they're published. If a book isn't selling well, it can usually be canceled with little impact on other titles in the line. However, if a book does well and is continued, it can become difficult or impossible to release new issues if the writer decides to quit or is fired.
The Game Series A game franchise has multiple games in its lineup that tend to share characters and settings. These games are easy to write because you can reuse parts of existing scripts or even cut-and-paste chunks of text between them.
A novella is a literary work that falls between between a short story and a novel, ranging in length from 10,000 to 40,000 words. There's also a novelette option, which has a word length of between 7,500 and 17,000 words. Finally, there's the novel, which can be as long or as short as 50,000 words.
Novels are usually longer than novellas. Sometimes they're divided into several volumes to accommodate their length. For example, Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace consists of 60 chapters, each about 15,000 words long.
Novellas are shorter than novels. They often focus on one central idea or character development scene after scene without much interruption. For example, Hemingway's short story collection Three Stories and Two Short Plays has only 9,000 words but tells three separate tales.
Short stories are even shorter than novellas or novels. They usually focus on an event or series of events that take place over a few pages or less. For example, Eudora Welty's The Optimist's Daughter is only 7,500 words long but it tells one continuous story through multiple flashbacks.
Words count. The more words you have the better! However many words you have is not important as long as they're not too many.
What is the ideal length for a novella? Finally, there is the novel, which can be as long or as short as 100,000 words.
The most common length for a novella is 30,000-35,000 words. Anything longer than this is considered a novel. Anything shorter is called a short story.
Generally, it takes me about two weeks to write a novella. Sometimes, I finish one in just a few days! But sometimes, they take a little longer.
I love writing novellas because you get such a wide range of possibilities with each project. You can tell a huge story in only 30,000 words, or you can choose many smaller stories that add up to the same thing.
There are so many different types of stories that could fit into a novella format. Some examples are: dramas, mysteries, comedies, tragedies, fantasies, science fiction, etc. The only limit is your imagination!
As for my tips for writing novellas: first and foremost, have fun with it!
Let's be explicit about terminology because the concept of "novella" differs. SFWA classifies short stories as 0-7499 words, novelettes as 7500-14,999 words, novellas as 15,000-39,999 words, and novels as 40,000 words and higher for award purposes. As far as I'm concerned, anything below 10,000 words is a short story and anything between 10,000 and 20,000 words is a novelette. Anything above 20,000 words is a novel, but that's only because I like long stories.
The term "short story" may cause some confusion since it can also mean an episode in a serialized novel or comic book. These days, many short stories are published in collections that include several stories by different authors. When you buy a collection of short stories, you will usually get one piece that is around 100 pages or less.
Now, what exactly is so great about short stories? Well, for one thing, they can be very powerful. There have been many famous short stories that have changed history such as "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne or "Fifty Shades of Grey" by E. L. James. Some people say that reading short stories makes them feel more emotional than books by themselves because you get to learn about people's lives and problems in a way that not every detail is revealed in a novel.
A short tale is defined broadly as any work of narrative fiction containing 1,000-10,000 words. Books, on the other hand, typically range from 50,000 to 70,000 words, however there are plenty of instances of novels that are longer or shorter than those arbitrary parameters.
Stories are usually based on real events or people. They tell one central event with a clear beginning and end. A story can be as simple as "The Boy Found Money Under The Street" or as complex as James Joyce's Ulysses. A story may relate a single incident or series of incidents that build up to a climax and resolution.
Novels, on the other hand, tend to follow a more structured format than stories. They often begin with an introduction which sets up the context for the story to take place in. This is followed by a main plot line that drives the story forward with a series of events that lead to a conclusion. There might be subplots within the story that come to a climax too; for example, one character could have an affair which leads to their marriage falling apart while another learns that they are pregnant even though they didn't think they were going to get married anymore. These are just two examples of subplots within novels; some novels may have as many as five or six major plots running at once!
Finally, essays are generally written on a topic given to the author.
