Informational process analysis essays describe how something is done without providing instructions on how to accomplish it. This style of essay might explain how a hot dog is created or how a phase change from a gas to a solid occurs. It's useful for people who want to know what happens during these processes but aren't interested in the chemical make-up of matter.
Process essays are often used by scientists when they want to understand the underlying mechanism of an event, discovery, or process. For example, a scientist may study how a disease spreads by writing a process essay on this topic. The scientist would then test his or her hypothesis by doing experiments and observing results. When the scientist writes about his or her findings, we call this document a "research paper."
Scientists use terms such as "explanation," "analysis," and "description" to refer to different types of papers. An explanation is a short paper that gives a single explanation for some phenomenon or series of events. An analysis is a longer paper that explores several possible explanations for a single issue or set of facts. A description is a longer paper that simply tells us what happens during a process or event, without trying to explain it.
For example, a scientist could write two papers on how diseases spread.
Process analysis essays are classified into two types: directed and informative. Before you begin writing your essay, you must pick which type you will write. Directional process analysis essays instruct the reader on how to do a task, such as baking cookies or cracking cryptograms. Informative process analyses explain what happens in the real world or within a system. For example, an informative process analysis of photography would discuss cameras, film, light, photosensitive substances, and so forth.
Directed process analyses are usually found in academic papers or reports. These essays give specific instructions on how to perform some task or procedure. Thus, they are useful for students to understand how certain procedures work or what tools are used by professionals in their fields. Some examples of directed process analyses include lab reports, medical reports, and technical manuals. In general, these essays are written in the first person and use facts and examples to support arguments.
Informative process analyses can be used instead. For example, an informative process analysis of photography could discuss cameras, film, light, photosensitive substances, and so forth without giving any specific instructions on how to take photographs. This type of essay is open-ended and does not specify exactly how the reader should go about solving the problem at hand.
Essays that combine directional and informative elements are also common.
In a directed process analysis essay, the writer takes a specific direction and explores issues related to that direction. For example, an essay that examines how technology has affected advertising would be a directed process analysis essay because the writer is looking at one particular aspect of this relationship (i.e., technology's effect on advertising). An informative process analysis essay, on the other hand, discusses various topics related to processes without being specifically guided by a director. For example, an informative process analysis essay about cooking would discuss the problems people have with cooking and their attempts at solving those problems by seeking out new technologies.
In addition to these two main types of essays, there are also topical essays and narrative essays. Topical essays are written about a specific topic covered in an exam and require knowledge of only that topic. Narrative essays are written as stories with a beginning, middle, and end and can include details from other events in someone's life. These essays often use examples from real life to help explain concepts such as motivation, cause and effect, and decision making. Motivation is the reason why someone does something; cause is what gives rise to an event or series of events; effect is what results from an action or event.
Process essays are classified into two types: directed (how to accomplish something) and informative (how something works). A directive essay gives instructions on how to attain a certain outcome (how to cook perfect grits). An informative essay informs the reader about something (how a rocket engine works).
Both types of essays include explanations why something is the way it is. These reasons may be explicit, such as "because I said so" or they may be implicit such as "because that's how it works". Either way, they help readers understand what is going on under the surface while they are reading about an issue that may not be clear at first glance.
A directional process essay is one that tells you exactly what to do to solve a problem or achieve a goal. It can be as simple as "read these steps until you find the one that applies to your situation", or as complex as a plan for building a rocket engine. The important thing is that the writer includes all the information needed to correctly perform the action.
Informative process essays explain how things work, without telling you exactly what to do. They may do this by describing different options available for achieving a result, explaining which ones are best in your situation, or even by showing how a previous event led to another one (e.g., "If you want your paper written on time, don't wait until the last minute").
