Metaphysical poetry is, in its most basic form, poetry in which two seemingly unrelated items are utilized as metaphors, and the flea in Donne's poem, employed as a metaphor, is an excellent example of this type of comparison. Donne may have been alluding to his own sexual appetite when he wrote this poem.
Metaphysical poetry is distinguished by original concepts and phrases, conceit, wit, obscurity, and learning. All of these essential features may be seen in Donne's poetry. Because of his independence and need for knowledge, his poetry is metaphysical. His poetry is filled with humor. Donne used words that only he knew how to use and created metaphors that only he could understand. His poems are also very obscure because he wanted them to appeal to as many people as possible so they would buy his books. Donne was born on March 15th, 1572, in the town of Holy Trinity, Ireland.
He grew up in England after his father was appointed Bishop of Bristol but they moved back to Ireland when Donne was still a boy. He had two siblings: an older brother named George and a younger sister named Elizabeth. Donne attended Cambridge University but left before graduating. He traveled around Europe looking at art and studying philosophy. During this time, he came up with ideas for poems that would make him famous. He returned home in 1615 and started writing books about religion and morality.
Donne died in 1631 at the age of 36. However, his work continues to be read today because he has been regarded as one of the best metaphysical poets. His writings show that he was an influential figure in early modern English literature.

His work is known for its use of mystery and metaphor which help him to explore issues such as mortality and human nature.
These are just some of the many different types of poetry out there. What makes something metaphysical? That can be determined only by looking at it individually. But generally, metaphysical poetry is considered any poetry that uses language to discuss concepts such as love, death, and reality with no reference to physical objects.
A Metaphysical poet is any of the 17th-century English poets who are drawn to the personal and intellectual depth and focus demonstrated in John Donne's poetry, the chief of the Metaphysicals. Donne's work pre-dating Herbert's by about 15 years brought him fame during his own lifetime but also provoked criticism from some contemporaries who found his ideas hard to understand.
Donne was a priest in England who did not write like a priest. His poems contain references to science, philosophy, and religion that show he has been called "the first modern poet." Donne was one of the first poets to use iambic pentameter, which means "five feet" in Latin. This type of poetry is based on five-beat lines that alternate between an unstressed syllable and a stressed syllable. Metaphysical poetry is sometimes distinguished by an extensive metaphor known as a "conceit." Herbert employs the metaphor of the pulley in this poem to show the need of balance in man's connection with God. When discussing the Creation of Man (humanity), God provides man with power, beauty, intellect, dignity, and pleasure while withholding the rest. Thus, man must work to maintain this connection with God, just as the artist must exercise restraint when creating a work of art so that it does not stray from the original idea.
Herbert uses the image of a pulley to explain this concept. A pulley system allows one side of a bridge to be lifted without having to lift the whole thing. So, too, with humanity and God. Although God gives man much, he also withholds things for reasons we cannot know. Thus, we must use our intelligence and skill to maintain a relationship with Him, just as an artist must use his or her judgment when creating a work of art.
Here, Herbert is saying that even though God gives man power, beauty, intellect, etc., they are not enough to keep us connected to Him. We must also use our skills to maintain this connection.
Furthermore, the image of the pulley shows that both parties must work together if there is to be peace and harmony between them. If God did not restrain Himself from giving man all He knows how to give him, then mankind would destroy itself.
