Angelou, Maya Her lyrics frequently highlight black beauty, the strength of women and the human spirit, and the yearning for social justice. She is a prolific poet. Her work has been cited as helping to "invent new poetry forms" during the Black Arts Movement.
Maya Angelou was born on April 4th, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. The only child of an unmarried couple, she was raised by her grandmother after her parents died when she was four years old. She became interested in writing at an early age when she would write poems and stories. She attended several schools before graduating from high school. In 1946, she graduated from Bennington College in Vermont with a degree in English literature.
After graduation, she moved to South Carolina where she worked as a secretary for a nonprofit organization that provided educational services to blacks who had been separated from their teaching jobs because of their race. While there, she wrote her first book, _I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings_, which was published in 1969. The following year, she became the first black woman to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
She married again two years later, this time to musician and actor Guy Van Schramert, but they divorced in 1952.

African American literature is a body of work written by African Americans. African American authors have engaged in a constructive, though often controversial, discourse with American letters since the pre-Revolutionary War period. As a result, the literature is rich in expressive nuance. It ranges from poems to plays to novels. The earliest known black author was Prince Hall (1590–1670), who published several religious poems between 1640 and 1670. In the 18th century, many slaves wrote about their experiences in letters that have been preserved today. These letters provide important insights into African American life at that time. After slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865, many black writers took up prose fiction as a way of expressing themselves freely. This genre emerged from the need for African Americans to create stories explaining how things were after slavery had ended and racial discrimination remained.
African American literature is different from other types of literature because it is not defined by its form but by its content. While some books may focus on historical events that have been influential in the development of Black America, others use fiction or poetry to discuss issues such as racism, slavery, civil rights, and poverty. Although there are differences among these works, they all deal with similar themes and share a common purpose: to tell the story of people who are usually ignored by society.

The most famous black person in America is probably Barack Obama. When he was elected president in 2008, many people didn't believe that it could be done. Today, Obama has proven many people wrong by becoming our first black president.
Obama's father was from Kenya, his mother was from Indonesia. He was born in Hawaii and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He became a lawyer and politician and now lives in Washington D.C.
In 2001, Obama created a national controversy when he gave a speech at Columbia University during which he said, "I believe that being black and living up north is a disadvantage today. I think about this every time I go to a baseball game or a football game and I see all those black faces staring at me blankly through their programs." Many people thought that this statement showed disrespect for white people and was evidence that Obama was naive and lacked understanding of racial issues. However, others believed that he was saying what many blacks felt but weren't able to say because they were afraid of being labeled racist. In any case, Obama later apologized for the incident.
