Leo Tolstoy was born on September 27, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia, to Count Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy and Anna Vyrubova. He had four brothers and two sisters. His father was a high-ranking government official who worked at various times as an inspector for the tax collector's office, a military clerk, and later as head of a district school board. The family lived in large houses, which they never owned, because they were always renting out their rooms or selling off their possessions.
When Leo Tolstoy was seven years old, his father was appointed ambassador to Turkey but was ordered by the Emperor Nicholas I to go home and run his estate instead.

Leo Tolstoy is widely regarded as a master of realistic fiction and one of the world's finest authors, best known for his works Anna Karenina and War and Peace. His novels are characterized by their immense depth and breadth, as well as their intellectual scope and ambition.
Tolstoy was born on November 7, 1828 in Sevastopol, Crimea (then part of the Russian Empire). His family was not wealthy, but they were not poor either. His father, Leo Nikolayevich, was a high-ranking government official who served as mayor of Sevastopol for several years before he was appointed governor of Simbirsk Province. His mother, Maria Nikolayevna, came from a noble Russian family. She died when Tolstoy was only nine years old, which left him with a lot of responsibility on his young shoulders.
When he was 14 years old, Tolstoy started writing essays and stories that were published in local newspapers. He continued to do this for a few more years after he went to university, where he studied law. But instead of becoming a lawyer, he decided to try his hand at writing fiction. His first novel, The Cossacks, was published when he was just 24 years old. It was followed by another six books over the next seven years.
Tolstoy was born in Russia in 1817. He was a poet, novelist, and dramatist known for his work in witty and caustic verse, serious poetry, and historical novels and tragedies. Tolstoy's dramatic trilogy set in the late 16th and early 17th centuries is among the greatest historical dramatic writing in Russia. It includes "The Power of God" (1852), "The Most Holy Body" (1863), and "The Most Holy Spirit" (1864). His other major works include "War and Peace" (1865-69) and "Anna Karenina" (1873).

Tolstoy was a prolific writer who produced both serious and comic poems. Although he began writing poetry at an early age, he did not consider himself a professional poet until much later in life. However, he did win several literary awards for his work.
He also wrote plays which have been performed in Russia but not outside of it. Two of these plays were adapted into films that have been released in Russia but not elsewhere.

Because of his two classic books, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy is regarded as one of the most significant and prolific writers in history. When Tolstoy's brother, Nikolay, returned home on leave, he convinced him to join the army and fight in the Crimean War in Ukraine until 1855. After their return, they both fell in love with the same woman, Maria Dmitrievna Saltykova-Tolstaya, but she married another man. This caused a deep rift between Tolstoy and his brother that wasn't healed until after their father's death in 1857.
Leo Tolstoy started writing poetry when he was very young, but it was War and Peace that made him famous around the world. Written over 20 years, from 1805 to 1825, it is about a large Russian family during the Napoleonic Wars. The book has been translated into nearly 50 languages and is still being read today. In addition to being a great story, it also contains many ideas that would later appear in Tolstoy's other works, such as anarchism, pacifism, and sexual freedom.
After publishing War and Peace, Tolstoy turned his attention to government corruption and other social issues. In 1869, he founded what is now known as the Tolstoy Foundation, which aims to promote peace and literacy worldwide. He also became a Christian in 1852 and later joined the Orthodox Church.
