We must work hard to preserve human ideals. We must control our appetites and hate. Desire may be subdued by being content and contented with what one has. The poet is telling us to be happy with what we have.

Evil is another word for misfortune or pain. We should ask God to remove these things from our lives using his mercy and grace. Praying for others allows us to show Christ's love to them even though they may not believe in him yet.
Finally, we should pray for ourselves too. We need to pray for our sins daily so that we can become holy people like Jesus.
