Field and Stream is an American magazine on hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities. (There is a Wikipedia article about this series.) Field and Stream began in 1895. The first copyright-renewed issue was in June 1937 (v. 42, no. 2).
Conde Nast purchased the magazine in 1966 for $7 million. In April 1992, Conde Nast sold all of its magazines to Northfield Publishing for $70 million. In October 1996, Field and Stream became part of Sports Illustrated Media.
Northfield sold most of its publications in 2001 to Ziff Davis, which was in turn acquired by Thomson Corporation in 2003. In January 2004, Field and Stream returned to an independent company when it was announced that John Arum and his brother Phil will become co-chairmen of the board.
The brothers are sons of David Arum and Phyllis Arum who founded the brokerage firm D. E. Shaw & Co. Inc. After graduating from Princeton University with degrees in biology and chemistry, John went into investment banking while Phil went into sports journalism. In 1995, they decided to go into business for themselves and formed an entertainment company called DA Management. They also own several fishing lodges in northern Michigan where they host hunters from around the world for excursions into their property for deer season.
Bonnier Corp. sold Field & Stream and its sister publication, Outdoor Life, to North Equity, a venture capital group that claims to build "transformative digital media brands," in October 2021. The magazine's final print edition was a special 125th-anniversary issue. It will be replaced by an all-digital format.

The first issue of Life Magazine is published on September 23. The first edition of Life as a weekly news magazine was released on this day in 1936. Margaret Bourke-photograph White's of the Fort Peck Dam graced the cover. The photograph was taken by Bourke's husband, Alfred Eisenstadt, who was an American photographer based in London.
Bourke was one of the first female photographers to work for a major newspaper when she joined the staff of the New York Times in 1923. In 1926, she went to France where she worked for several months as a photojournalist for Le Petit Parisien before returning to the United States. In 1933, she founded her own photographic agency which specialized in photographing natural disasters and other breaking news events. In 1936, she was hired by Life to take photographs for their news stories and feature articles. She died in 1958 at the age of 61 years old.
Alfred Eisenstadt was an Austrian photographer who moved to London where he set up his own photography studio. He met Margaret Bourke while working on a project for the International Labor Organization in France. They married in 1929 and had two children together. After marrying Bourke, he changed his name to Alfred Eisenstadt to avoid confusion with another famous photographer named Alfred Eisenstein.
Life was started by Henry Luce who was also the founder of Time Magazine.
