Kligman had also been in the automobile; she was the only survivor of the collision. Poet Frank O'Hara bestowed upon her the moniker "death-car girl," which plagued her for the rest of her life. Kaprow's article "The Legacy of Jackson Pollock" was published in 1958. In it, he calls for "concrete art" comprised of "paint, chairs, food, electric and neon lights, smoke, water, old socks, a dog, and movies." He also states that "a work of art should be able to stand on its own without any explanation of what it is about or who it is by."
These are just some of the many ideas and concepts that would come to define the New York School of Art and Painting. The young artists of this movement were greatly influenced by the works of American abstract expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. They adopted many aspects of these artists' practices including large scale works, raw materials used as subjects instead of models, and intuitive painting processes guided by inspiration rather than theory. Although most members of the group were born after the end of World War II, they came together around 1955-56 at the New York City studios of Hans Hoffman and Robert Motherwell where they shared ideas and techniques and began to show their work together. By the late 1950s, the term "New York School" had been coined to describe this group of artists.
