In the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf, the protagonist Beowulf insists on fighting Grendel with his bare fists rather than a weapon since Grendel, he claims, does not use one. Beowulf considers employing a weapon against a beast that does not use a weapon to be dishonorable. He intends to confront Grendel on equal footing. When Grendel attacks him, Beowulf manages to fend him off by punching and kicking him.
This scene comes near the beginning of the poem. Before this point, we have seen Beowulf, who is a mighty warrior, defeat various monsters with ease. But now he faces something more difficult: a monster that uses no known weapons or tactics but which is still able to harm him. In order to deal with this threat, Beowulf changes what I believe is his usual method for defeating enemies. He decides not to use his sword because he believes that would make him dishonorable. Instead, he fights Grendel with his hands only. He defeats Grendel despite being outnumbered by him because of his own courage and strength.
This story takes place in Scandinavia during the reign of a king named Hygelac. Beowulf was a Geatish hero who fought and killed giants when he was just a young man. Later on, he becomes King Hrothgar's bodyguard. At some point, Beowulf goes on vacation to seek out a creature called the Fenris Wolf in order to kill it. But the wolf kills him instead.
He has boasted about clearing the planet of giants and the seas of monsters, therefore he is unconcerned about fighting with weapons.
The poem says that if you do not fight her with your bare hands, then she will kill you. Beowulf believes this so much that he goes to die in order to prove himself. This shows how much he believes in his mission as well as his courage because most people would run away from such a battle.
Grendel's mother is called the nameless dread. This shows that she is indeed a terrible creature who should be feared.
Also, Beowulf fights many other monsters during his adventures. He kills Grendel's father too so there is no need for him to fight both at the same time.
However, despite all his victories over the monsters, he always ends up dying. Even though he tries to help others, he cannot escape death. This shows that humans must live their lives while they can because soon enough they will die. No one is guaranteed tomorrow so we should enjoy today and not worry about what will happen tomorrow.
He wishes to demonstrate his merit and honor. Beowulf closes by declaring that he and Grendel would not use weapons: "we shall abstain from the sword." He goes on to say that if Grendel accepts ("if he dares pursue conflict without a weapon"), God or fate will decide who wins. This poem ends with a hope that neither warrior will be killed.
Beowulf is considered one of the greatest heroes in English history. He fights many battles against foreign enemies, including Grendel and a monstrous dragon. In one battle alone, he kills two monsters. In addition to being a brave fighter, he's also humble and doesn't consider himself better than anyone else. These are just some of the reasons why people love Beowulf so much today.
In conclusion, we can see that Beowulf is a great hero because he fights many battles against strong opponents and saves Denmark from destruction. He is honest and doesn't try to act like someone he isn't. Also, this poem describes him perfectly; he is brave, humble, loyal, and faithful. Therefore, he is a perfect example for everyone to follow.
